About
Plain-English tax guides for self-employed people who do their own taxes.
Why Own the Gap exists
The US tax code has more than 70,000 pages. None of them were written for someone driving for Uber on weekends or running an Etsy shop between client projects.
Free IRS guides explain the rules. Tax software asks the questions. Neither tells you, specifically, what a freelancer in your situation can write off, how much to send in quarterly, or whether that home office you use six days a week qualifies.
Own the Gap was built to close that distance. Every guide we publish is written for one specific type of self-employed person, uses real 2026 numbers, and explains the why behind each rule -- not just the what.
The goal is simple: you should keep more of what you earn.
